Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Who is Compass?

Compass is a nonprofit organization made up of people who are passionate about supporting families with low income to achieve their financial goals and become financially secure. We don’t exist to make a profit – we raise enough money each year so that we can provide great programs to the families we serve.

What is financial coaching?

Financial coaching is a partnership between you and our team of coaches that provides resources, information, accountability, and support, as well as tracks your progress towards your goals. Financial coaches provide a judgment-free zone to focus on what you want: credit, debt, homeownership, career, education, emergency savings, budgeting, starting a business, and much more.

What does financial coaching cost?

Financial coaching at Compass is offered to you at no cost.

Where do financial coaching appointments take place?

Financial coaching appointments can be done by phone or online video calls.

How often do I meet with my coach?

You can meet with your financial coach as often as you wish.

How does FSS saving work?

We know that it can be frustrating when your employment income increases, and you have to pay more in rent. With FSS, BHA will set aside savings for you if your rent share increases because your employment income increases. These savings will be set aside for you monthly and BHA will give you reports on the amount you have saved, at least once a year.

How do I access my FSS savings?

You can access your FSS savings in two ways. First, you can request money from your FSS savings to help you build credit, pay down debt, enroll in job training/education, purchase a home, develop or expand a small business and purchase or repair a car. You cannot use the account to pay for rent. Ask your financial coach for more information.

Second, you will receive your savings in full at the end of the program when you: (1) maintain employment; (2) have all household members off cash welfare assistance; (3) achieve other goals you set for yourself; and (4) comply with your lease.

What if I don’t have a job right now?

That’s okay. You don’t need to be employed to be in FSS. Once you find a job you will save any rent increases from your employment income.
